Contemporary classes are offered from 9 years of age and follow the New Zealand Association of Modern Dance (NZAMD) syllabus. This syllabus teaches students to understand the concepts of contemporary movement such as weight, flow, momentum, and the use of gravity. Freedom of movement, spatial awareness and the enjoyment of dance are all aspects that are encouraged.
There is the option for students to sit examinations and/or a medal award in August/September. Medal awards encourage students to perform for friends and family in a fun and non-judgmental atmosphere. The medal awards are a great performance opportunity and develop confidence.
Once students are in their second year of major level examinations, they have the opportunity to be nominated by the examiner for a NZAMD Scholarship. This is an annual event attended by students who display the highest quality of performance in examinations. Students attend master classes taught by well respected and world class teachers and compete for monetary prizes.
